Cyrus the Great

Banafsheh's Blog
My blog covers such topics as Iran, Islam, the Middle East, philosophy, history, and politics.

Cyrus the Great (576-529 BCE), founder of the Persian Empire and author of the World's First Constitution. Regarded by Nicolo Machiavelli as the examplorary leader, Cyrus was the chief inspiration for The Prince.

Cyrus built a secret captial at Takht-e Jamshid (Persepolis) near modern day Shiraz. One of the coolest places I have ever been to.

Ibn Sina (Avecinna) (980 - 1037 CE)
Philospher, Physician, and Scientist Ibn Sina laid some of the ground work for what would eventually become Existentialism.

Tehran is one of the world's largest cities. It is also one of only two large cities not built by a major river or body of water. The other is Mexico City (which unlike Tehran was originally established on a lake, but subsequently that lake was drained). Incidentally like Mexico City (the largest city on earth) Tehran is also a high elevation city (also not a common feature for large cities). Skiing is one of Tehran's favorite pasttimes..

Mohammed Mosedeq (May 19, 1882 - March 5, 1967) was the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran from 1951 - 1953. In order to secure Britain's oil interests in Iran the US launched a coupe d'etat in 1953 that resulted in the toppling of Prime Minister Mosedeq's government and 25 years of Iranian oppression under the Shah and eventually the Islamic Revolution.

Iran is a state with extraordinary ethnic diversity. It adds enormous strength to Iran's history and cultural expressions.
